Why this matters

A barcode number with a bad check digit will usually still look fine — it's the right length, all digits — right up until something actually enforces the checksum: a label encoder, a real checkout scanner, or (if you're printing a GS1 Digital Link QR code) the resolver itself rejecting a real scan. Catching it here, before it's on a label, is a lot cheaper than catching it after.
